Dan and Renee Don't Win Polarcats Race!
It'll be a cold day in
um, Webster, when Dan Rohnke doesn't
win a Polarcats race. Well it was a cold day and Jim Oberst decided
it was time to go fast. After a duel that lasted most of the 4.3
mile race, he overcame Keith Cona for the win. Together they relegated
usual Polarcats victor Dan Rohnke to third. Since Keith and Jim
aren't entered in the series, however, Dan remains the favorite
for the overall win at the end of the season.
In the women's race, word of Patty Cooke's speed scared Renee Rombaut
into hiding in Florida. Patty ran away to the win, followed
by Diedre O'Reilly and Christine Bathgate.
What about that race distance, then? 4.3 miles? The usual
course consists of two laps around a 2.2 mile loop but, although
the roads were almost entirely clear, the driveway on which we
usually start was too icy for 88 runners starting a race. After
moving the starting line out into the street Bill Kehoe started
the pack off around the rolling course.
With the rapidly growing success of the Polarcats series,
88 runners might seem like a small field. We know that the cold
weather wouldn't put off any the hardy individuals who usually
participate in these events, but we did hear rumors of some other
sporting event taking place the same day that might have drawn
a few people away as spectators. (Spectators?! Perish the thought!)
