97-98 Polarcat Race #4
Pineway Ponds Park, Spencerport, January 11, 1998
On a cold and windy day in Spencerport the 1998 Polarcats series got
interesting. Mike Platt won his second race of the series, making him
the only runner to have won more than one. Since he has already missed
two races in this best-4-out-of-6 series, he has to run both of the
two remaining races and do well in them in order to take the men's
title, but he's a good enough runner to be able to pull that off without
too much trouble if he chooses to do so.
The strong wind from the west was a definite deterrent to fast times in
this race. The temperature was just below freezing but the wind made it
feel much colder. Runners who decided to wear jackets over their polypro
tops suffered a noticeable "parachute effect". Few runners
weren't glad to get into the shelter for hot cocoa, chili and bagels
after the run.
Renee Rombaut celebrated one of her last few days of being 29 years old
by winning the women's race, making her the favorite for winning the
women's side of the series.
