The Original Galleria
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the world's first shopping mall in the modern sense of the term. It looks to ornate and fabulous to have been built as a retail shopping space but that is in fact what it was made specifically for in 1861 (and it's why so many modern, tacky shopping malls are called "galleria").
