Sigma EX300 f/2.8 APO

Sigma EX300 f/2.8 APO

Sigma is a company that earned itself a bad reputation years ago with cheap, low quality lenses. If this telephoto is any indication, they're well on their way to turning that around. The construction is first rate, as are the optics. It is probably a little softer wide open than the OEM equivalents, but I generally stop down to at least f/4 (as with most lenses, a big part of the advantage of a wide maximum aperture is a bright viewfinder and faster autofocus). For about $1500.00 less than a Pentax 300/2.8 it's a steal. Another good point is that it's fairly small and light for a 300/2.8. Sigma's matched 2x teleconverter is excellent and makes for a great 600mm f/5.6.
